I made it to Quartzsite, Arizona

I had no idea how slow my internet connection would be here. I hope to post something meatier soon, but for now I just wanted to make it known that I have not dropped off the face of the planet, just the internet. 😄

Railroads and funny town names and changing plans

Not necessarily in that order... My plan was to return to Arizona via Barstow, California, in part because I was there a really long time ago and I am curious to see that area again, and in part because it would allow me to avoid the greater Los Angeles area. But then a cold snap hit California. Pretty much the whole state is experiencing unusually cold temperatures. And the route to Barstow? It goes through Tehachapi, which has a weather forecast of snow and wind at the time I was planning to travel through there. My van is not properly equipped to drive it in snow. So... changing plans. Deming and the City of Rocks

For me, staying in Deming was really all about visiting the City of Rocks State Park, about a half hour away. I've been seeing interesting volcanic rock here and there in the Southwest, but it hasn't seemed very accessible. Finally in this park it looked like I'd be able to get up close and personal with it. I looked at the possibility of camping at the park, but according to the website, the campsites were all booked. So I decided to make a day trip of it. When I got out there, I learned that they only reserve a small fraction of their campsites and if I didn't need an electrical hookup, I'd have no trouble getting a campsite. I thought about returning the next night with all my stuff to camp, but the terrain is a bit difficult for my sore foot (which continues to improve! yay!) with steep parts of the paths covered in crumbly, loose rocks. What are the odds?

A few weeks ago, I went to the dissolution ceremony for a sand mandala in Pasadena. When I was there, I was approached by a journalist and asked some questions. My interview didn't make it into his video, but at the 2:03 mark of this video https://spectrumnews1.com/ca/la-west/news/2019/02/01/sand-mandala-dissolution# , you can see me between the shoulders of the two people in the foreground (the young guy and the white-haired woman). Don't blink or you'll miss me, but there I am. This is my second time in the background of something on TV, but I don't have proof of the first one with me.
