North Carolina Bits
The area of North Carolina that I visited was pretty seriously impacted by Hurricane Florence about a year ago. In many ways, the cluster of smallish towns are still recovering from all the damage. According to my friend, this tree fell during the hurricane and the business associated with this truck just closed up and went away.
When I got to my friend's house, it looked like smooth weather for the duration of my stay. The first few days were amazing for August on the Carolina coast. I expected to be blown away by heat and humidity, but it was actually pleasant -- overcast with highs in the upper 70's! Then as Hurricane Dorian developed, the weather started to change. The mugginess started to return and the community was on edge. My friend reminded me that even outer bands of a hurricane would have winds that would make driving my van questionable, maybe even impossible. So I moved up my departure date by several days to get away from the coast well ahead of Dorian.
The last night we went out to dinner, and stopped at an art gallery featuring local artists before our meal. There were a few pieces that really caught my eye. They're way out of my price range, but I got permission to take photos as long as I promised not to use them to create copies. That was an easy promise to make!
This is the first one, and it reminded me of the marsh land on Chincoteague island. The brushstrokes evoke realism without trying to be realistic:
This next one is painted on aluminum, which gives it a really gorgeous glow. The perspective on this scene is really interesting to me. I wonder if a drone was involved in coming up with the inspiration for it:
What I admire about this third one is that the artist has a unique way of seeing trees and light that result in an interesting form of impressionism that I haven't seen before. They had a number of her works in the gallery. This one really takes me to the experience of looking up through trees in the forest.
If you're intrigued by these artists, more of their work is on display on their web pages. In the order of the paintings I presented:

Goodbye Havelock area, I planned to stay longer, but Dorian (and some work considerations) are pushing me home!
